Idris Elba DJs @ W.A.R., Ibiza Rocks, 23/8/2013

August 26, 2013

IMG_0287 smFriday saw the last appearance of Idris Elba and his summer DJ residency at Ibiza Rocks. Formerly a DJ before he became an actor, Idris has been DJing on Friday nights for 6 weeks over the summer, first at We Are Rockstars (W.A.R.) at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel and then afterwards in a more intimate setting at Ibiza Rocks House (Pikes Hotel).

At W.A.R., Idris was back to back with Ibiza Rocks regular DJ Doorly, and trying to outdo each other, they played some great tunes. With the other DJs who were on that night, provided a great warm-up to Example who was headlining the night.

I was there  the first night  Idris DJed, and he’s definitely adapted his set over the recent weeks. There was a greater range of music in the first week, drawing on tunes from the 80s and 90s from Madonna, Human League and Oasis amongst others. This week he played music more akin to Example and DJ Wire who were following him. That was until the last 20 minutes or so, when it started to get more interesting, and they played tracks that I knew. Kicking off with Candi Staton and a mix of ‘You Got the Love’, followed by ‘Roxanne’ by The Police, everyone was singing along and having a great time. Next up was Black Betty’s ‘Ram Jam’, which I haven’t heard played anywhere for ages, which segued into Artic Monkey’s ‘I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor’ ending with Beastie Boys ‘Intergalactic’. What a great way to end a DJ set and what has been a great residency for Idris, who clearly loved spinning the tunes and commanding the stage at Ibiza Rocks, as the photos show.

There’s one photo of Idris in the DJ booth at Ibiza Rocks House, where the setting is just for a hundred or so people and the music played tends to be more akin to a house party. To be honest, I was too busy enjoying myself and didn’t take notice of what Idris was playing, but in previous weeks it was funky, soul and dance tracks.
